Sophisticated Technology

Digital technology makes possible many features that are not possible with analog technology. Here is a description of some of Bernafon's advanced digital features and their benefits.

Advanced Digital Features and Benefits

Some features are shared amongst digital hearing instruments but are implemented slightly differently from each other.  Listed below are some generic names for features and, when applicable, the name of the feature that is found in a Bernafon hearing instrument.

Noise Reduction

Bernafon's Adaptive Noise Reduction selectively reduces the volume in frequency regions where there is background noise to increase listening comfort and reduce the intrusiveness of the noise.

Adaptive Noise Reduction can be found in ICOSNeo and Win.

Adaptive Directionality

Directional microphones can increase speech understanding in noisy listening environments. Adaptive directionality is when the directional microphones automatically adjust the microphone focus for the listening situation, keeping the spotlight on conversation.

Information on the Multi-Dimensional Directionality in ICOS can be found in the ICOS section.

Adaptive Feedback Cancellation

Whistling hearing instruments (feedback) can be an annoying side effect of wearing amplification.  Adaptive Feedback Cancellation detects potential feedback and in most cases eliminates the whistling before it becomes audible.

Adaptive Feedback Cancellation can be found in ICOS, Symbio XT, SwissEar and Neo.

Environment Detection

Some digital hearing instruments today have the ability to scan the sound environment and detect the presence of different types of sounds such as speech, background noise and wind noise.  This information may be used to change settings in the hearing instrument such as the Adaptive Noise Reduction and the Adaptive Directionality.

To find out more about Bernafon’s proprietary environment detection system implemented in ICOS, read about Audio Recognition™ in the ICOS section.

Data Logging

Data logging can be found in some of the more recent digital hearing instruments.  Data logging, as its name suggests, collects data about the activity of special features in different sound environments.  This helps your Hearing Care Professional to optimize the hearing instrument for your personal needs.

To find out more about how ICOS wearers can benefit from data logging, read about the ICOS Tracker in the ICOS section.

ChannelFree™ Signal Processing

ChannelFree™ is a state-of-the-art digital processor that can only be found in Symbio XT and SwissEar  hearing instruments.  ChannelFree™ preserves the natural structure of speech and precisely reproduces the sounds that surround us, resulting in maximum speech understanding and clear, naturally rich reproduction of music and other sounds of life.
